What we do
Promote more transparency, accountable government
Details
We need a logo for HawaiiSunshine.org, a website we are producing as a free public service for Hawaii taxpayers. This logo will be the starting point for the entire site design. The central component of the site will be a publicly search-able database of state (and eventually) local expenditures.
Tech Specs
Design Goals
Hawaii government is clothed in secrecy about how it operates and spends our money. This site aims to open the door and let the sunshine in! Want to use this message to drive people to the site and keep them there.
Target Audience
Hawaii taxpayers primarily. Also investigative reporters, government watchdogs, public policy researchers, parents of public school children, perhaps even government employees.
What makes us unique (USP)
Since the government has taken almost every step they can to hide this public information from you, we are spending private funds to create this website for the good of all Hawaii taxpayers. This site will put data in the hands of Hawaii residents, which will in turn create a corps of amateur investigative reporters who can help hold government accountable.
Message to communicate
Hawaii government is clothed in secrecy about how it operates and spends our money. This site aims to open the door and let the sunshine in!
Feelings to communicate
insider status, public service, suspicion, rebellion (think Tea Party), action. But still want to keep a lighthearted feel--is that possible?
Customer Motivation
Quality, user-friendliness, usefulness of information
Colors I like

Colors to avoid
Anything too stately/government-looking (navy blue)
Likes
Would be nice if it fits in well with our organization's logo (see at grassrootinstitute.org), just in case we do a campaign with both logos together. At the same time, we want it to be able to stand alone, so doesn't need to be the same colors or anything. One thing I like about our current logo is that it looks great 1,2, or 4-color, depending on what we're using it for.
Dislikes
With the name HawaiiSunshine, we want to be careful it doesn't look like a vacation website. But we also don't want it to look so serious that it looks like a government website.
