Part 2 (of 2)
As a business owner, there are three little letters that you have to be aware of if you want to have any success online, and those letters are SEO. If you caught our last article as an introduction to SEO, than you are already ahead of the game and have hopefully implemented some of the SEO strategies we discussed on how to increase your search engine rankings by practicing good SEO on your website. If you haven’t, then you may want to go back and review that SEO article before reading any further.. Last time, if you remember, we discussed three items on your website that you need to take a look at. They were your title tags, your keywords, and your descriptions. Today, we’re going to take SEO one step further. Having a website that has good SEO can sometimes be difficult because in essence you are writing for two different audiences. One audience is your prospects; the people on your site that are interested in your products or services. The copy and content on the site needs to be clear, concise, and persuasive and the website design needs to be attractive and engaging. If your site doesn’t have these two things, then you’ll need to look into a new website design. Check out prova.fm for more information on holding your own contest to get a website designed. Your second audience is the search engines. You have to write your content in such as way that the topics you think your website is about match what the search engines think they are about. One really simple and effective test for this is to use the Google keywords tool. Use the tool now and check the option to generate keywords from your website content. Enter your website URL and wait for the tool to analyze your site. Once it’s done, it will give you a complete list of keywords that it thinks are relevant to your site. Look through these and make sure they are indeed what you think your website is about. If they aren’t, you need to reevaluate your website. One of the biggest factors in increasing your page rank in the search engines is the quality and quantity of your copy. When I say quality, I don’t mean that the search engines are going to grade your writing, although it’s smart to get a proofreader or editor to review your content. What I mean is that the content is relevant and has a good keyword density – somewhere between 2.5% to 5% is what I try to aim for. Anything more starts to get repetitive and begins to annoy your visitors. What is keyword density? It’s the amount of times a keyword appears in your website copy compared to the total word count. Sure there are fancy tools out there for you to use to discover this, but the easiest way is to just do the math yourself. Take the total number of times your keyword appeared in your copy, let’s say 15 times, and divide that by the total number of words, let’s say 500 words. Multiple that number by 100 to get a percentage, and you have a keyword density of 3%. Another strategy to keep in mind is the number of incoming links to your site. The search engines look at these links as recommendations from other sites. The better the source of the link, the more weight the search engines give to your site. Quantity is also a factor. This is why you may see random blog comments with a link. This is in poor taste of course and usually they get erased, but I think you get the idea. If you follow some of these simple rules for SEO, you’ll soon see that your page rank for your website should increase, which will lead to more exposure for your site, and more importantly, an increase in potential clients.
